Student strategies for solving tasks with maps

The research project should focus on student map use strategies—the issue that hasn’t been sufficiently investigated yet. Considering the importance of individual types of map skills, the project should aim to identify and describe different secondary school students’ cognitive strategies (and their dimensions) when reading, analysing and/or interpreting maps (thematic, topographic, etc.). Furthermore, the research should aim to investigate which factors (gender, cognitive and learning style, previous experience with map use, etc.) influence the choice of strategy when solving tasks with maps. In addition to the identification of effective strategies for solving tasks with map, bottlenecks in the problem solving process should be detected. It is expected that quantitative as well as qualitative methods (especially eye-tracking methods and questionnaire surveys) will be used.
